Team accounts (former Family accounts) - questions and answers

Note: The features mentioned in this article are available in all packages except the Light package.

What are Team accounts?

Team accounts are basically ordinary mailbox.org accounts that have special groupware features enabled. An account holder may create additional mailbox.org accounts in order to establish a closed user group with other people. The members of such a group may then share access to their individual calendars, contacts, files, and task lists with each other. In addition, it is also possible to create dedicated shared calendars, contacts, etc. which are accessible for the entire group.

Note that up to 10 accounts may form a single group in this way. That means creating a group of Team accounts is always permitted as long as the service is used for private purposes. For instance, students who live in shared accommodation may also use Team accounts to arrange their daily schedules or plan leisure activities.

However, due to licensing restrictions we cannot permit any commercial use of Team accounts. For business customers we offer mailbox.org business with same features but under a different license.

How much does a Team account cost?

The Team account option is included in all packages except the "Light" package.

All Team accounts within a group remain entirely independent mailbox.org accounts in terms of their credit management and underlying tariff. This also means that each Team account will always be billed separately.

Due to licensing reasons it is not possible to globally administer the Team accounts in a group or provide a joint bill for these accounts. Technically speaking, configuring a mailbox.org account to work as a Team account does simply enable the added groupware functionality for easier sharing and editing of Office data. It does no more than that, and no less.

How can I set up a Team account?

For Team accounts to work securely and not infringe the privacy of other users, it is important for us to make sure that no user can be added to any group without their consent. In order to achieve this, we implemented a simple mechanism for how a new user group is created:

Subscribers of an eligible mailbox.org account package may set up further mailbox.org accounts within their own administrative context. All these accounts automatically form a joint user group, yet remain totally independent otherwise: They have their own tariff, credit management, log-in credentials, e-mail inbox, or Office programs.
