Setup mailbox with macOS Mail app
Once you have enabled two-factor authentication, external applications such as Outlook, Thunderbird, DAVx⁵, or mobile calendar and contact apps can no longer access mailbox using your regular password.
To do so, you need to create an application password. Without enabled two-factor authentication (2FA), the use of application passwords is optional.
Set up your email account on macOS (Apple Mail)
Follow these steps to set up your mailbox account in the default Mail app on macOS:
1. Open System Settings
Go to System Settings and open Internet Accounts.
2. Add a new account
Click Add Account, then select Other Mail Account....
3. Enter your account details
Provide the following information:
- Name: Your display name
- Address: Your main mailbox address (not an alias)
- Password: Your mailbox password
4. Configure the incoming mail server
Choose between the two available protocols:
- IMAP (recommended): Emails remain on the server
- Server:
imap.mailbox.org
- Server:
- POP3: Emails are downloaded and removed from the server
- Server:
pop3.mailbox.org
- Server:
Use your main address as the username, along with your password.
5. Configure the outgoing mail server (SMTP)
Enter the following SMTP server settings:
- Server:
smtp.mailbox.org - Username: Your main address
- Password: Your mailbox password
