Which programmes are compatible with mailbox?

mailbox supports a wide range of programmes and browsers. In this article, you will find out which applications mailbox is compatible with.

In our glossary, you will find explanations of the terms used in this article.

Note

mailbox does not support integrations with external programmes that have not been officially tested or approved. Using incompatible applications may result in functional limitations or errors, particularly when it comes to email synchronisation, calendar sharing or API usage. We therefore do not provide support for such applications.

Browser compatibility

We recommend using current browser versions for the best possible experience and security.

| Browser | Operating system | Notes | |-------------------|-------------------------| | Google Chrome | Windows, macOS, Linux | | Mozilla Firefox | Windows, macOS, Linux | | Microsoft Edge | Windows, macOS | | Safari | macOS, iOS |

If you are unable to load the mailbox web application or it does not load correctly, you may be using an outdated browser. At mailbox, we only use encryption mechanisms that are currently considered secure, which are applied as soon as the webpage loads. Older browsers may not support these mechanisms, which is why a connection may not be possible.

Tip

In your own (security) interests, always ensure you have the latest version of a browser installed. We recommend Mozilla Firefox. It is updated regularly and is available for Windows, Mac and Linux.

Email programmes

Both web-based applications and desktop email programmes are suitable for managing your emails, contacts and calendars. We recommend the Thunderbird Desktop version.

Email programmeOperating systemNotes
Thunderbird DesktopWindows, macOS, LinuxUse the latest version
Outlook Web/DesktopWindows, macOSObserve limitations with calendar integration
Apple MailmacOS, iOSWebDAV support required for calendars
Note

For external programmes, an application password is required when two-factor authentication is enabled.

Compatibility by operating system

  • Windows: Chrome, Firefox, Thunderbird Desktop
  • macOS: Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Thunderbird Desktop, Apple Mail
  • Linux: Firefox, Thunderbird Desktop

Practical use cases

Here you will find typical scenarios for different target groups.

Standard users

Cross-device access

mailbox enables synchronisation of emails, calendars, and contacts across different devices. This is done using standardised protocols:

  • Emails: Synchronisation via IMAP/SMTP in programmes such as Thunderbird, Outlook, or mobile email apps
  • Calendars: Synchronisation via CalDAV in supported programmes (e.g. Thunderbird with Lightning, macOS/iOS Calendar, Android via DAVx⁵)
  • Contacts: Synchronisation via CardDAV in compatible programmes

For further information on CalDAV and CardDAV, please see our overview article.

Calendar sharing

mailbox allows sharing calendars and address books with other users or via public links.

  • Shared calendars are provided in iCal format.
  • External recipients usually receive read-only access; changes by third parties are not possible.
  • Sharing only works in programmes that support CalDAV/iCal.

For more information on sharing calendars and address books, see this article.

Experts

  • Open standard protocols (CalDAV, CardDAV) are available for calendar and contact synchronisation.
  • There are no native webhooks at mailbox, which means server-side event triggers or push automations are not directly supported.
