Using YubiKey without NFC on older iOS devices
Based on feedback from users as well as the YubiKey manufacturer, we have learned that the YubiKey can, under certain conditions, also be used on iOS devices without NFC – for example, on older devices. After careful testing, we were able to confirm that this option is generally possible. However, please note that we cannot guarantee the functionality of this method. The device manufacturer also does not intend the YubiKey to be connected in this way. Use is therefore at your own risk.
Connecting the YubiKey to an iOS device
Since iOS devices do not necessarily have a native USB port, you will need the Apple Camera Connection Kit to connect the YubiKey to your device. This kit contains two adapters. One of them – originally designed for connecting cameras – allows the connection of USB accessories. With this USB adapter, a YubiKey can also be connected. This enables you to use two-factor authentication (2FA) for your mailbox login.
Note: This method may be subject to limitations and does not work in all cases. Use is without warranty.
How it works
-
Open mailbox in the browser of your choice on your iPhone or iPad.
-
Enter your username and then tap on the password field. The on-screen keyboard will be hidden as a result.
-
Connect the USB adapter (from the Apple Camera Connection Kit) to your device.
-
Insert the YubiKey into the adapter.
Important: The YubiKey must not be inserted upside down! The contacts of the YubiKey must face upwards – i.e., towards you.
-
Confirm the system message “This accessory is not supported by this device” by tapping “OK.”
-
You can ignore this message – simply continue with the login process.
