Answers for private customers

The Knowledge Base for private customers is already largely up to date. A few individual articles are currently being revised and will be updated shortly. We thank you for your understanding and look forward to providing you with the latest information on using mailbox.

Please note: The Knowledge Base has changed slightly. Categories have been adjusted and any URLs stored in the old Knowledge Base are no longer valid.

Backup PGP Key

Emails that your communication partners have encrypted with your public key and then transmitted to our servers can only be converted back into plain text with the matching private key and the corresponding password. The same applies if you have activated the encrypted mailbox.

We, the team at mailbox, do not possess any replacement or secondary keys. Even if you have stored your private key in Guard, we cannot decrypt your encrypted emails, since it is additionally protected by a password. We have no way whatsoever to restore the plain text of your emails. If we could do that, encryption would be meaningless and would provide you with no security benefit.

Therefore, always keep a backup of your private key in a secure location, for example in an encrypted container file. For the associated passwords, we recommend storing a backup in an encrypted password database such as KeePass or KeePassX.
